Karim Al-Zand: Music: Capriccios

Capriccios

for solo violin

These short solo violin works are part of a gradually accumulating set of Capriccios begun in 2002. They are all the product of requests for short recital pieces from students of Kenneth Goldsmith, a colleague of mine at the Shepherd School of Music. imageKen is a passionate champion of new music and his students have continued his advocacy of contemporary works. In addition to reflecting the whimsical and virtuoso tradition of the capriccio, the pieces here and there make musical references to the quintessential capriccios, Paganini’s Op. 1. There are currently five pieces in the set. They may be performed singly or in groups.
